A dioxins & furans lab test is used to determine whether extremely toxic combustion by-products are present in dust, ash, soil, or wipe samples — and at what concentration.

What the test is actually for

• Dioxins and furans are formed when materials containing chlorine burn at high temperatures.

• Common sources: burning plastics (PVC), treated wood, electronics, insulation, solvents, and some pesticides.

• They are persistent, bioaccumulative, and regulated at very low (ppt) levels because of cancer and endocrine risks.
